MAURICE JAUBERT (1900 - 1940)

Regarded as the most important French film composer, Maurice Jaubert is closely associated with the best directors of his time : Jean Vigo, Marcel Carné, René Clair and Julien Duvivier. His tragic death at the age of 40, while fighting in WW II, as well as the sad faith of one of the masterpieces he contributed to, L'Atalante by Jean Vigo, have created about him a nearly mythical aura. His concise style, both popular and poetic, has influenced many European composers. Between 1975 and 1978, director François Truffaut paid homage to Jaubert by using some of his music for four consecutive films: Adèle H, L'Argent de poche (Small Change), L'homme qui aimait les femmes (The Main Who Loved Women) and La Chambre verte (The Green Room).
